James Mark Thayer

James Mark Thayer, a cherished son, brother, husband/life partner, and friend passed away on May 26, 2024, at the age of 62. Jim was born on December 4, 1961, in Dearborn to Donna and Larry Thayer. As an adventurous child, Jim was known for his friendly nature, always eager to strike up a conversation and make new friends. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1980 and went on to serve honorably in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. A man of many talents, Jim was a master mechanic and most recently worked as a Chief Information Security Officer. He enjoyed rebuilding cars, fixing houses, and was the go-to "Mr. Fix-It" for his family and friends. An avid outdoorsman, Jim loved campfires, kayaking, and spending time in nature. Jim was a proud member of the Justice Riders Motorcycle Club for over 30 years, including holding the positions of Treasurer, Vice-President, and President. His fellow club members remember him as a true leader and a dedicated brother. Jim is survived by his beloved wife/life partner, Barb Rentschler; his loving mother, Donna Thayer; and his dear sister, Julie (Chris) Sharer. He was the loving and devoted “Uncle Jimmy” to Erica and Rachel Sharer. He was the cherished “Grandpa Jim” to Janice (Ray), Tanisha, Desa’Rae, Jameera, James, and Layla. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Thayer, and his siblings, Jerry and Jill. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jim had a deep love for animals, especially those he was predeceased by: Buffy, Harley, Geegi, Thor, Trouble, Squirt, and Tiger. Barb will continue to care for Stalker and Guido; Stalker was his inseparable "partner-in-crime." Known for his genuine and kind nature, Jim will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He brought joy and laughter to every conversation and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Selfless by nature, Jim was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a special place in his heart for those who were down on their luck and was known for rooting for the underdog. Jim’s compassion and generosity extended to everyone he met, as he constantly sought ways to support others. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 30th, from 1 PM until 8 PM at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Road West, (between Sheldon and Beck) Plymouth. The funeral service will take place on Friday, May 31st, at 1 PM at the funeral home, followed by a procession to Parkview Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the River Rouge Animal Shelter, 100 W Pleasant St, River Rouge, MI, or to Saving Cats & Kittens in Michigan, P.O. Box 51283, Livonia, MI 48150. Jim was truly a remarkable man. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to share a conversation and a laugh with him.
