Janice Marie Munday

Janice Marie Munday, age 75, passed away peacefully in her home in Canton, Michigan on June 21, 2023. Jan was the first child born to J.W. & Mary Edna (Reedy) Burress on July 1, 1947, in Union City, Tennessee. Her sons, James and David Owens preceded her in death, as did her parents, husband Dennis Munday, sister Barbara Burress, brothers Michael and Ronald Burress, and step-mother Nadene (Wessel) Burress. As a teenager, Jan’s first job, which she considered her worst, was picking cotton in the fields of Troy, Tennessee. Jan quit high school, but at the age of 30 she went back to complete her high school diploma and then graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. She spent many years working in the guidance and counseling department at Schoolcraft College where she assisted students and Military Veterans with the placement into a 4-year college. Jan’s efforts and passion for her work were recognized when she received the Schoolcraft College Presidential Award. She and her family enjoyed traveling to various locations and took many trips to London, England to visit Dennis’ relatives. Jan was very devoted to her faith and was a vital part of her church community. For many years she served as a Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and adult education teacher, was a member of the choir, shared her love of God to the hearing-impaired members using her knowledge of sign language, and was passionate about her missionary work. Jan was a true caregiver to so many. The love and memories for Jan will be carried forward by her sister Peg McElroy, son and his wife Jeff and Sarah Keith, granddaughters Karis, Eliza, Raley, and Leah, niece Julie Kelley and her family Kevin, Jordan, and Brendan, dear friend Mary Tharp, and all those whose lives she has touched. Visitation Wednesday, July 5th 2-8 PM at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 980 N. Newburgh Road (between Ford Road and Cherry Hill) Westland. In state Thursday, July 6th 10 AM preceding the 11 AM Funeral Service at Merriman Road Baptist Church, 2055 Merriman Road, Garden City.
