Margaret A. Billings

Margaret Ann Billings, beloved 95 year old mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on June 30, 2024. Born and raised in Detroit, she learned resilience and independence early on, navigating life’s many challenges with grace and strength. After graduating high school, she went on to work with freight and was always good with numbers. Friends introduced her to Marlin. They got married, and for much of her life, she was a homemaker for her large family of five children. Margaret, affectionately known to some as “Nama”, was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. An only child, Margaret faced life’s adversities head-on. She survived cancer twice and coped with the loss of many loved ones, and later, her eyesight, all the while maintaining an unyielding spirit. Her strength and perseverance in the face of hardship were truly inspiring. Her devotion to her family was unparalleled. Margaret was especially close to her mother, caring for her diligently during her battle with Alzheimer’s. She also lovingly cared for her family through sickness and crises, and good times, too; imparting wisdom and love that will be cherished forever. Rick’s nightly dinner-time visits and the countless hours spent babysitting, playing “beauty shop” or Monopoly/“Bank” were a testament to the strong family bonds she nurtured. Margaret was a voracious reader, had a keen interest in politics and never missed her midday “soaps” (or the daily recap discussion with Donna). A lover of music and records, she found joy in the tunes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and other old, classic artists. Margaret was a great cook and couldn’t resist a chocolate milkshake, a donut, or Linda’s delicious baked goods. Margaret took great pride in maintaining a neat, clean, and modest home, where she found satisfaction and comfort. She was always a very private person and lived alone for many years until recent months when she moved to Waltonwood. Even through various challenges, she often spoke of all of the wonderful people she met there. Margaret is predeceased by mother, Margaret “Nonnie” Murphy and her father, Charles Murphy; her husband, Marlin Billings; and her children, Debra Daniels and Kenneth Billings. She is survived by her children, Linda (Eric) O’Neill-Trimble, Rick Billings and Donna (Keith) Heard; grandchildren Brendan (Kelly) O’Neill, Katie (Jay) Flaherty, Lee (Brandi) Daniels, Brian (Kari) Daniels, Kelly (Troy) Nelles, Megan (Nolan) McGraw and twelve great-grandchildren.
