Michael Spunar

Michael Spunar, business entrepreneur, doting father, unwavering Detroit Lions fan, and horticulture enthusiast passed away unexpectedly in his Canton home on January 9. Michael was 70-years old and is survived by the love of his life and wife of 31 years Carrie, and two adoring sons Nicholas and Nathan and daughter-in-law Maddie. Michael is the only son to his deceased parents Michael and Sonja Spunar, and son-in-law to Peter and Jane Wasmiller. He was the beloved brother to his two older sisters Shirley Korth and Susan Lyons and brother-in-law to Christopher Korth and Mike Lyons and Jason and Alicia (deceased) Wasmiller and Brian and Tracy Wasmiller (Emily). He was the uncle to four loving nieces and two nephews who will always remember his passion for dancing the polka. His nieces and nephews include Kate Reilly (Brian), Jennie Korth (Dave), Sarah Korth (Ward), Elizabeth Korth, Andy Lyons (Mae), Tim Lyons (deceased). Michael, born Michael John Spunar in Detroit on March 28, 1953, was a spirited, meticulous business owner, outdoorsmen, lover of fishing, sports, cars, Northern Michigan, gardening, dancing, coney dogs, ice-cold beer, and above all else - his family. Michael gave the true meaning to “proud Dad”, and when it comes to fathers, Nicholas and Nathan won the lottery. Michael enjoyed watching both of his boys grow into the men he always hoped that they would be. From cheering them on from the sidelines of their football games to casting a rod to catch the biggest fish of the day, waxing their first cars together or competing in a game of horseshoes, he exemplified that behind every young boy who believes in himself is a father who believed in him first. His boys were truly his pride and joy. He was also a trailblazer when it came to his self-built career. Michael founded Genesis Lawn Sprinkling Company and over 45 years he created a brand known for exceptional customer service, reliability and an owner who always put his customers first. After his successful career, Michael retired and dedicated his newfound time immersing himself in horticulture and creating an impressive flower garden. He quickly became well-versed in the caring for dozens of plants and flowers and often consulted neighbors on how to grow and care for hydrangeas, which were Michael’s favorite flower that framed his beautiful backyard. And it’s not surprising hydrangeas were his favorite flower since they represent sincere and honest emotions, gratitude, and heartfelt emotions – all characteristics that Michael had. Carrie enjoyed Michael’s newfound hobby and the flowers he would pick for her throughout the spring and summer. Carrie and Michael enjoyed so much of life together including spending time with their boys, family, and friends. They also loved to escape to Glen Arbor, a beautiful spot nestled in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes surrounded by gorgeous pine trees, sandy beaches, and some of the most pristine waters in Northern Michigan – a favorite place of Michael’s since childhood. Here they would walk the beach searching for Petoskey stones to add to Michael’s rock garden and relax to watch amazing sunsets while sipping wine and beer on the beach. Their love for each other was immeasurable. In Michael’s honor, a Visitation on Sunday, January 14th 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. has been scheduled at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Road West, (between Sheldon and Beck) Plymouth, MI 48170. Lying In State, Monday, January 15th from 10:30 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Mass immediately following at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 44800 Warren Road, Canton, M I 48187.
