November 10, 1958 - June 3, 2021
Musician Charley Shipman (Charles Ward Shipman IV) or C4 as our father would call him, will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. He left this earth on June 3, 2021 at the young age of 62 years following a brief illness. Charley was a spiritual person. As a young adult he furthered his spiritual growth while he attended the Claymont Society For Continuous Education in West Virginia. His life-long growth was influenced by philosophers George Gurdjieff and JG Bennett. He was well known among family, friends, and fellow spiritual seekers as a very kind, gentle, compassionate man of integrity. He devoted himself to understanding the deeper meaning and workings of life, love, and human strivings. He saw playing and creating music, dynamics in personal relationships, fixing things (he could figure out how to fix almost anything), illness and personal challenges, as opportunities for spiritual growth. He loved his family dearly and was a generous and devoted friend. In the face of dealing with his own personal challenges, his strength and tenacity were inspiring and his ability to freely laugh at himself was a gift. Surviving is his wife Mary (Larabell) Shipman; mother Patricia Shipman; sisters Chris McClain and Merilee Shipman (John Klepetka); brothers Scott Shipman, Bob (Amy) and Mike (Debe) Blackett; aunt Johanna Shipman; five nephews; and very close life-long friends Lisa Angelo and Mike Gilmore. He was preceded in death by his biological parents, Charles Ward Shipman III and Marion Latreille Shipman; and brother-in-law David McClain. In keeping with Charley’s wishes there will be a private memorial to be determined at a future date. In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, we ask to consider memorial contributions to the Claymont Society For Continuous Education located in Charles Town West Virginia (claymont.org) and the J.G. Bennett Foundation (jgbennet.org). Charley would also be heartened by any memorial contributions to organizations that help ease the suffering of others.
