Mary Lee Hannington
July 18, 1960 - April 17, 2022
The world lost a unique and creative soul with the passing of Mary Lee Hannington, 61, who died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 17, 2022. Mary is survived by her life partner of 33 years, John C. Schmidt, of Detroit, and her brother Ian D. Hannington (Jayne), of Clarkston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice (2014) and Ian (2001) Hannington. Born in Detroit on July 18, 1960, Mary attended Groves High School and graduated from Michigan State University with degrees in Fine Art and Darkroom Photography. A talented designer and illustrator, Mary found her passion in the film industry, co-founding Rivet Films with partner John Schmidt, a company specializing in high-end visual effects through which she established herself as a highly regarded Commercial Film Director and Production Designer. Multi-talented and creative, Mary loved the written word and found joy in the writing of her experiences. An ardent animal lover, Mary volunteered her time and talents to both the Humane Society as well as any neighborhood cat or dog who looked hungry or in need of love. A 35-year resident of Indian Village, she felt pride in the history of her home and the uniqueness of her neighborhood. Mary’s wishes for cremation will be honored and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. To share a memory, please use the Share a Memory tab on this web page.
