Dolores Hommel

Dolores Hommel, age 86, passed away in the loving care of her family on April 7, 2026. She was born January 3, 1940, in Detroit to Stanley and Lottie Gradzikiewicz. A proud first-generation Polish American, Dolores grew up on Mercier, where her deep sense of family first took shape. Dolores married Ronald Hommel, and together they shared 46 years of marriage until his passing in 2002. They raised three children, moving from Detroit to Belleville – Ronald Hommel, Lynn (Mike) Winnie and Tracie (Tom) Kelp. Family meant everything to her, and she found great comfort and pride in the closeness, support, and togetherness they carried through all of life’s challenges and celebrations. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Stella Molenda and Irene Sultana, brothers Leonard Grady and Henry Rostek, and nieces Pat Gauley and Kathy Presley. She will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren Emma (Chad) Good, Claire Kelp and Thomas Kelp; and great-grandsons Michael, Joe and Alex Good, as well as her sister, Jane Presley, and many nieces and nephews. Dolores enjoyed the simple pleasures of life – family poker games, game nights, bingo, and hours spent conquering levels of Candy Crush. She loved the excitement of slot machines and the laughter that came with friendly competition. She loved spending time “up north,” especially in the fall when the colors were changing. She created cherished traditions, including her family beloved “Queen for the Day” deer-spotting game, a title she proudly won many times. She made lifelong friendships in several Red Hat groups and at the Friendship Station in Plymouth Township, where she served on the Board of Directors and helped plan events that brought joy to her fellow seniors. When she was able, Dolores enjoyed spending time at local senior centers, Moose and Elk lodges, and card groups throughout the community, where she spent many hours playing Pinochle, Euchre and other games. Her sharp mind and competitive spirit earned her multiple medals in the Senior Olympics for card playing. Known for her easy laugh and love of slapstick comedy and sit-coms, Dolores brought warmth and humor wherever she went. She lived with a warm heart, a joyful spirit, and deep love for her family. Dolores also has a special love for English bulldogs, having several throughout her life who brough her joy and companionship. Her memory will live on as a “Melody of Love” in the hearts of those she left behind. Visitation Thursday, April 9th from 5-8 PM at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 980 N. Newburgh Road (between Ford Road and Cherry Hill), Westland. Funeral Service Friday, April 10th at 12 PM at the funeral home. Interment at St. Hedwig Cemetery, Dearborn Heights.
