Sheldon Michael “Mike” Hayes, age 71, of Livonia, Michigan, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2025. Born on September 9, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, Mike was the beloved son of the late Sheldon William Hayes and Phyllis Bexon Hayes. He spent his early years in Redford, Michigan, before moving with his family to Plantation, Florida. A proud graduate of Riverside Military Academy in Georgia, Mike was a dedicated student and talented athlete who graduated with honors. Throughout his life, Mike demonstrated a strong work ethic and a deep respect for his family’s legacy. He worked as a machine operator for several companies, including Cadillac Asphalt—a business proudly founded by his grandfather and father. Mike found immense strength and purpose through his recovery journey, maintaining sobriety since 1993. He was a committed member of the AA community, generously sponsoring and supporting many others along their own paths to healing and hope. A true sports enthusiast, Mike cheered passionately for his hometown teams, especially the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Red Wings. He also enjoyed playing golf for many years until his health made it difficult to continue. His love of music was lifelong—he played the organ, harmonica, accordion, and guitar with a joyful spirit that brought music into the lives of those around him. Mike was a devoted father and grandfather who will be remembered for his strength, humor, and enduring love for his family. He is survived by his children: Stacia (Jeff) VanWyck, Sheldon Matthew (Lindsey Bargren) Hayes, Madonna (James) Judge, and Jonathon (Katelyn Olewnik) Hayes. He was a cherished grandfather to Anthony, Tyler, Abigail, Brooklynn, and Leo, and was joyfully anticipating the arrival of his granddaughter, Rita Judge. He is also survived by his siblings Patricia Krings, Brady Phillips, and Christopher Hayes, and was preceded in death by his brother Clifford Phillips. Visitation Wednesday October 29, 2025 2 PM to 9 PM with a time for sharing at 7 PM at Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home, 46401 Ann Arbor Rd. W, (btwn Sheldon & Beck) Plymouth. In state Thursday October 30, 2025 10:30 AM until the 11 AM Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 34530 W. Michigan Ave. Wayne, MI.
